Collection of MAPs

HPPCL also collects medicinal and aromatic herbs, rosins, Shilajit from local farmers and community forest user groups. These collected herbs and rosins are processed in HPPCL’s own processing units. Different MAPs collected includes cinnamon, Xanthoxylum, eucalyptus and rosin.

Pine Resin

Pinus Roxburghii

It is collected from plants Pinus Roxburghii. Real method is used to collect resin from community forestry as well as natural forest of mid hilly region of Nepal.

 

 The resin is processed further to produce Rosin and turpentine.

Pine resin is composed of terpenes, alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, delta-3 carene, and sabinene, the monocyclic terpenes limonene and terpinolene, and smaller amounts of the tricyclic sesquiterpenes, longifolene, caryophyllene, and delta-cadinene.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus leaves are collected from community forestry area, forest land and private cultivated area of terai region of Nepal.

 

Eucalyptus is fast-growing evergreen tree and are characterised by the possesion of indefinite shoorts and naked bud. Leaves are usually alternate, thick and gland dotted. Flowers are ebracteate, usually white in simple or paniculate umbels.

 

Eucalyptus Oil is obtained by steam distillation of fresh or semi dry leaf material of Eucalyptus sp. It is commonly called Masala in Nepali.

 

Uses in pharmaceutical preparations, flavoring of cough drops, vaporizers, mouth

gargles, toothpaste etc, rubefecient, general germicide. In perfumery, scenting of soaps.

Raw Shilajit

Shilajit

Shilajit(Asphaltum) is a thick sticky tar like substances found in high mountainous region if Nepal. It is a gelatinous substance that is secreted from the side of the mountains, rock when they have become heated by the rays of sun in the months of June, July.

Raw shilajit is processed by dissolving in water followed by decantation and sedimentation method.

It is used in Ayurveda, Unani, and as a traditional system of medicine. It contains at least 85 minerals in ionic form, as well as triterpenes, humic acids and fulvic acids.

 

It is used as anti-allergic, anti- diabetic, memory enhancer, increase fertility in both men and women. It helps to clear brain fog.

Cinnamon

Cinnamomum tamala

Cinnamon leaves are collected from community forestry area, forest land and private cultivated area of mid hill region of Nepal.

 

Cinnamon (Tejpat) is an evergreen tree found between 450 – 2000 m. in Mahabharat region of Nepal. It is also cultivated. Leaves are lanceolate, three-veined, aromatic. Flowers are pale yellow in terminal and axillaries – branched clusters.

 

Cinnamon oil is obtained by steam distillation of partly dried leaves and twigs of Cinnamomum tamala. Nees & Eberm. Its vernacula name is Tejpat.

Used in perfumery, in chemical industries and in flavors.

Zanthoxylum

Zanthoxylum armatum D.C.

Zanthoxylum fruits are collected from community forest area, forest land and private cultivated area of mid hill region of Nepal.

 

Zanthixylum (Timur) is found in Mahabharat regions between 1500-2400 m. It is also cultivated. It is a thorny shrub or small tree with corky bark and strong pricles on the branches. Leaves are pinnate; leaflets 2-6 pairs, toothed. Flowers are small, white in loose clusters. Fruit is ovoid, red when mature, splitting into two valves.

 

The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dried fruits of Zanthoxylum armatum D.C. Its vernacular name is Timur. 

 

Being rich in linalool, and also containing limonene, methyl cinnamate and cineole, it is used in the fragrance and flavor industry. Anti-infectious, sedative, arthritis, cholera, toothache.

Wintergreen

Gaultheria fragrantissima

Wintergreen leaves are collected from community forestry area as well as government forestry area of mid hilly region of Nepal.

 

Wintergreen (Dhasingre) is a bushy shrub growing at 1200-2600 m altitude. Leaves are ovate to lanceolate and toothed. Flowers are small white in racemes. Leaves when crushed impart fragrance of wintergreen oil.

 

Wintergreen oil is obtained by distillation of the leaves of Gaultheria fragrantissima Wall. Its local name is Machhino and Dhasingre.

 

It is used as a flavoring agent in the confectionery industry and in the manufacture of soft drinks; it is also used in the pharmaceutical and perfumery industry, also used as Antiseptic, a diuretic, stimulant, emenagogue and anti-rheumatic. It is very useful in many rheumatic conditions, for gout and stiffness due to old age. It also revitalizes and gives energy following muscular pains, particularly good for athletes for instance.
