Processing of MAPs

HPPCL has its own processing units through which it processes medicinal and aromatic herbs cultivated as well as collected from community user groups to produce essential oils. Currently HPPCL produces twenty-five tons of various essential oils including chamomile oil, citronella oil, lemongrass oil, palmarosa oil, French basil oil and eucalyptus oil.

Chamomile Oil

Chamomile (Matricaria Chamomilla L.):

Harvested crop is wilted and essential oil is produced by steam distillation

 

Chemical constituents

Active constituents are chamazulene, bisabolol, farnesene, germacrene, heptadien, cadinene, elemance and caryophyllene.

 

Organoleptic Properties:

Appearance - Viscous liquid, color-dark-greenish blue, aroma - intensely sweet, herbaceus, coumarin-like with a fresh-fruity undertone.

 

Uses

Dry flowers are used for tea and produced oil is used for flavoring, cosmetic, perfumery and medicinal purposes.

 

Total quantity produced yearly: 1 ton

French Basil Oil

French basil (Ocimum basilicum L.)

Harvested crop is wilted and essential oil is produced by steam distillation

 

Chemical constituents

- Major constituents available in essential oil are linalol, geraniol, cadinol, cineol, cymene, bronylaceted, fenchol, camphor and methylchevicol.

 

Organoleptic Properties:

- Appearance - Fluid liquid, color-pale yellow, aroma - sweet, spicy, fresh-with a faint balsamic woody undertone.

 

Uses

- Used in perfumes and flavors as well as aroma therapeutic uses.

Palmarosa Oil

Palamarosa(Cymbopogon  martini roxb)

Harvested crop is wilted and essential oil is produced by steam distillation

 

Chemical constituents

- Main constituents are geraiol, pinene, myrcene, cineol, terpinene, aarnesol, linalol, methyl heptenol, citronellol and ciral.

 

Organoleptic Properties:

- Appearance - Fluid liquid, Color - pale yellow, aroma -sweet floral, rosy.

 

 Uses

- Produced oil is used for flavor and fragrance. In cosmetic industry for scenting of soaps.  It is used for flavoring of tobacco.

Mentha Oil

Mentha  (Mentha arvensis L)

Harvested crop is wilted and essential oil is produced by steam distillation

 

Chemical constituents

Produced oil contains menthol, menthone, pinene, methyl acetate, piperitone, terpineol and Caryophyllene.

 

Organoleptic Properties:

Appearance - Slightly thick liquid, Color - pale yellow, aroma - strong, fresh and somewhat bitter-sweet.

 

 Uses

In the isolation of menthol crystals, in flavoring of toothpastes, mouthwash and pharmaceuticals. HPPCL uses mentha in preparation of Sancho, Sancho balm.

Citronella Oil

Citronella (Cymbopogon  Winterianus jowitt)

Harvested crop is wilted and essential oil is produced by steam distillation

 

Chemical constituents

Geraniol, citronellol, geranyl, acetate, limonene, citronellyl acetate, elemol, camphene and sesquiterpens.

 

Organoleptic Properties:

Appearance - Fluid liquid, Color - light yellow aroma –fresh and sweet

 

 Uses

Produced oil is used for flavoring, cosmetics, perfumery, fungicide and insect repellent.

Lemongrass Oil

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)

Harvested crop is wilted and essential oil is produced by steam distillation

 

Chemical constituents

Citral, terpinene, terpineol, myrcene, borneal, dipentene, methyl hepterone, linalool, geraniol, citronellol and minor components.

 

Organoleptic Properties:

Appearance - Fluid liquid, Color - deep yellow to orange-brown and aroma - fresh-grassy lemon-type

 

Uses

Dried leaves are used for herbal tea and produced oil is used for flavoring, cosmetic, perfumery and medicinal purposes.
